Madagascar's Masoala Peninsula:
Evergreen paradise and protected area for still unknown animal species
The Masoala Peninsula in the North Madagascar houses the largest contiguous protected area of the island nation. 2,400 km² of rainforest and 100 km² of marine park are protected here. Since the local population interfered massively with the ecosystems of the peninsula through intensive agriculture, slash-and-burn agriculture and logging of tropical precious woods, the area was designated a nature reserve in 1997. The Development of active ecotourism should additionally contribute to the preservation of this unique landscape and at the same time ensure the survival of the local people. The biodiversity in Masoala is one of the highest on earth: two percent of all animal and plant species on earth live in Masoala. Many of the species are also endemic and either unique to Madagascar or even viable only in this limited area. Since the forest on the peninsula is difficult to access in large parts, researchers assume that numerous previously unknown plant and animal species are hiding in the thicket of the rainforest.
