"Karenjy", the handmade car from Madagascar
The Karenjy, with its distinctive look, is the only car made in Madagascar and one of the few automobiles made in Africa.
On the streets of Madagascar's capital Antananarivo, this car with its striking look is hard to miss. It was designed for Malagasy and by Malagasy and is perfectly adapted to the infrastructure here.
For the visit of Pope François to Madagascar, a second papamobile, the Mazana II, is built by Karenji. His predecessor Jean Paul II had already been provided with a single model of Karenji built as a papamobile during his visit to Madagascar.
A great pride for the entire team that had built the vehicle.
It is a 4×4 with a robust Peugeot engine.
At first glance, the Karenjy looks like shapeless, clunky car that somehow looks like a mixture of a Trabant and a Hummer. However, this strange vehicle is very capable off-road and copes with both the local infrastructure on the roads, as well as on the common tracks.
From the very beginning, every Karenjy was and still is made purely by hand. The car is manufactured by about 70 employees in Fianarantsoa, the body is made of fiberglass and polyester.
All parts of the car except for the parts that are not available here engine, transmission, windows and tires, are made locally
We offer these vehicles for self-driving.
If you want to drive one of these rare cars yourself you can rent it from us for 150€ / day.
