Road Trip - 19 days with Harley Davidson® through Madagascar

Discover the island of Madagascar on the back of a Harley Davidson® on a route of more than 2,500 kilometers and look forward to an experience that you will remember for a long time. Because on this incomparable tour you will not only discover breathtaking landscapes and enjoy the hospitality of the Madagascans, but also experience an impressive variety of tourist highlights. In addition, thanks to our many years of experience, there is also plenty of room for good food and sights off the main tourist routes. Along the RN 7 you will dive into a world that cannot be compared to anything else on this planet. On your Harley Davidson®, you'll zoom along humpy tracks and winding roads, past rice paddies that sparkle in the sunlight, bizarre desert landscapes, mangrove areas and unique primary forests that are home to numerous animals and plants found nowhere else on earth.

During the tour you will travel on a Halrey Davidson® Sportster 1200, a lightweight, sleek yet maximally comfortable motorcycle. This machine is designed for one rider and offers maximum safety even on the sometimes difficult roads of Madagascar. You want more detailed information about the machines or about our tour? We want your vacation in Madagascar with the Harley Davidson® to be the greatest adventure of your life and are always ready to consider your individual ideas, wishes and preferences in the given tours. Just contact us.

Day 1: Arrival in Antananarivo

You reach the island of Madagascar by plane and land in the capital Antananarivo. From the airport there you will be picked up by us and our team and transferred to the Villa Sibyl brought. There, the machines are already waiting for you together with an iced aperitif. This is followed by a briefing by our guide and the discussion of safety information and details about the route. Afterwards you will spend the night either directly in the Villa Sybille or (depending on the optimal conditions for a quick early morning start) also in an equivalent hotel in the city.

Day 2: Antananarivo to Antsirabe (168 km)

The first day of your journey on the Harley Davidson® through Madagascar starts in the early morning hours to avoid getting stuck in the turbulent traffic of the capital Antananarivo. For getting up early, you will be rewarded with a fantastic view after only a few kilometers, when the buildings of the city are left behind and the breathtaking landscape with the rolling hills and the many rice fields unfolds in front of you. A stop is planned in Ambatolampy, where you can marvel at the sometimes bizarre production of kitchen utensils made of aluminum or watch a table soccer game being made. For lunch, stop at a small local restaurant. Finally, in the early afternoon hours, you will reach Antsirabe and check in at the Vatolahy Hotel. You will have a few hours at leisure until the aperitif and dinner at the Trianon.

Day 3: A detour to Hautes-Terres (70 km)

Before heading to Hautes-Terres by motorcycle, you can first look forward to a detour to the large market of Antsirabe. Another highlight of the day is the city tour on the bike through Antsirabe, before you take the exit to Betafo. Once there, you will have a short walk to the impressive waterfall where you can enjoy a picnic lunch. If you prefer to dine in a restaurant, you can find one in Betafo. In the afternoon, you will return to Antsirabe, but not without a detour to the natural thermal baths of volcanic origin, which will pamper you with hot water. The Vatolahy Hotel will then be waiting for you for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Continue to Ranomafana

At first, the road is relatively straight through lush plains dominated by rice fields. Then the landscape changes and the forested region "Tapias" joins. There, during the drive, you can discover numerous species of trees that are unique to this region. When you pass Ambositra, you will have the opportunity to take a coffee break and refuel your machine. From now on, the road meanders much more and many traditional villages and hills line the road. When you reach Ambohimahasoa, you can refuel your own energy reserves there with a typical Malagasy lunch. Afterwards, you will continue directly to Ranomafana via a spectacular road that runs directly through the unique primary forest. If you want to get to know nature even better, a visit to the Ranomafana National Park is a good idea. Alternatively, a detour to the village or to the hot swimming pools will delight you. You will return to the Thermal Hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Ranomafana to Manakara

Today's section of the route takes you along the east coast. The road here leads through an impressive landscape that delights with lush green vegetation. Towards afternoon you will reach Manakara, where you will check in at the Hotel Vanilla.

Day 6: The Manakara area

The area around Manakara has a lot to offer for tourists. Today you will travel about 12 kilometers in a northerly direction, where you will then board a boat that will take you across the Pangalanes Channel. The mighty waterway is already imposing in itself. However, at least as fascinating is the planned detour to a completely isolated village, which promises many lasting impressions. At the end of the day, you will return to Manakara, where the Hotel Vanilla awaits you.

Day 7: Manakara

Today is completely at your leisure. You have the possibility to explore Manakara by yourself or to have a closer look at the Indian Ocean. A side trip to the "Trou du Commissaire" is also worthwhile. For the overnight stay you can either stay at one of the hotels there or at the Hotel Vanilla.

Day 8: Going to Sahambavy (250 km)

Today you will first return via the already known winding road. You will drive through a hilly landscape, enjoy the view of the tropical forests and travel back towards the highlands. Arrived in Sahambavy, the Lac Hotel welcomes you. This captivates with a special location in a small forested area directly on a lake.

Day 9: Continue to Ambalavao (68 km)

Although today's stage covers only a few kilometers, it is nevertheless packed with various highlights: In Sahambavy you will start the day with a visit to a local tea plantation before continuing to Ambalavao in the early afternoon. The beautiful road leads through the already known rice fields and in the background a fascinating panorama opens up with numerous hills as well as the famous wine growing areas of Madagascar. Upon arrival in Ambalavao, you will have ample time to visit the village, famous for its extraordinary architecture. Afterwards, you will transfer to the hotel Tsienimparihy Lodge, where you will enjoy a restful night's sleep following your dinner.

Day 10: Going to the Isalo Massif (225 km)

In the morning, you will first visit the unique Anja Forest, which is not only home to numerous animal species such as calicoes or chameleons, but where nature conservation is a top priority in Madagascar. Afterwards, the journey continues past Ihosy, before you finally reach Horombe-Plateu with its impressive landscape. There, the Isalo Ranch Hotel awaits you, where you will not only have dinner and spend the night, but also have the opportunity to relax by the pool.

Day 11: Continue to Ifaty (276 km)

First of all, this day will take you towards Tulear, where lunch is planned. Afterwards, you will drive along the coast on a 39-kilometer-long route, where you can expect some surprises in terms of landscape: sand dunes, mangrove areas as well as sections in which thorny bushes dominate the picture alternate. From here you will go directly to the Hotel Belle Vue, which will spoil you with comfortable rooms and a dinner. Enjoy the view of the large fishing village and make yourself comfortable.

Day 12: Ifaty

Today you can safely leave the machine at the hotel and enjoy a relaxing day. Be sure to make a detour to the sea and enjoy the sun as well as the crystal clear water. Dinner will then be waiting for you in the village of Ifaty before you return to the Belle Vue Hotel for the night.

Day 13: Continue to Sarodrano (51 km)

Today's section of the route is also rather short, but in terms of scenery it is a revelation. It passes under the Tropic of Capricorn through a region that visually resembles the end of the world. The long coastal road is lined with thorny bushes and offers spectacular scenery. Later, Eden Lodge welcomes you, where you will spend the night.

Day 14: Going to Isalo (237 km)

Today we go back to Isalo. Back in the north, the landscape also changes again. Another stopover is also scheduled on this section of the route: Zombitse-Vohibiasa. There you can visit the national park before heading to Isalo Rock Lodge for the night.

Day 15: Continue to Fianarantsoa

Day 16: Fianarantsoa

Day 17: Going back to Antsirabe (217 km)

Today's tour is composed of two sections: First, you will make your way to Ambositra by Harley Davidson®. There you will have a short stop for lunch. Freshly strengthened, the tour finally continues to Antrisabe, where you are expected at the hotel Les Chambres du Voyageur for the night.

Day 18: Return to Antananarivo (168 km)

The tour of Madagascar is now coming to an end and you will drive back to the capital of the island. Depending on whether you want to stop for lunch on the way, you will reach Antananarivo either around noon or in the early afternoon. Now it is time to say goodbye to the bikes. You will then make a detour by bus to the Haute Ville before heading to Le Carnivore restaurant for dinner. Afterwards, you will either await your return flight at Villa Sybille or spend another night here if you are not departing until the next day.

Help

FOR MADAGASCAR

After 10 months of total inactivity, self-employed people in the tourism industry in Madagascar are completely without income. There is no opening of the borders in sight in Madagascar and we are at the beginning of the rainy season, which is the low season, even in normal times. I have started a fundraiser for the guides and drivers I know well. From this money we will buy rice and other essentials and distribute them regularly, if possible, until the resumption of travel activities in April 2021 at the earliest. My special thanks to those who have already donated. I will start buying rice tomorrow and will begin distributing it this week.
