About the trip

The gates of the deep south

From the lush green highlands to the desert plains of the south, you will traverse an incredible variety of landscapes by motorcycle.

On each stage you will discover the many natural and cultural treasures that Madagascar has to offer: Waterfalls and legendary lakes in the highlands, forest reserves, tea plantations, the Isalo and Ranomafana National Park...

During the 1000 km of this route towards the Great South, you will not miss any of the enchantments that Madagascar has in store for its most curious travelers.

Duration: 8 days, including 5 days motorcycle ride.

The travel days in detail

Day 1: Arrival in Antananarivo

Our team will greet you immediately upon arrival at Ivato International Airport and transfer you to your hotel.

Villa Sibylle is a private guesthouse near the airport, surrounded by a tropical garden. Relax from the flight and enjoy your first dinner there in Madagascar with an overnight stay.

Day 2: Antananarivo - Antsirabe

Day stage from 170 km

The first long and lively first stage gives you the opportunity to take the bike in hand and appreciate all its qualities.

Our escapade in the heart of the plateaus continues toward the second major city in the center of the island, Antsirabe.

It is known as one of the agricultural and industrial production centers of the country and offers a landscape of plains and valleys interspersed with forests.

Founded in the 19th century by Norwegian missionaries, Antsirabe appears much more "European" than other towns in Madagascar, as evidenced by the magnificent colonial villas and the regular buildings.

In the garden of the hotel there are countless chameleons all hiding in the trees and some ray turtles that can often be seen on a small island in the middle of the lake.

 Day 3: Antsirabe-Ranomafana

Stage for the day : 220 km

You will leave Antananarivo province for Fianarantsoa province.

With decreasing altitude, the vegetation becomes denser and denser, you will soon cross the mountain cloud forest and approach the town of Ranomafana made famous by the national park of the same name.

The thermal swimming pool there with very warm water provides relaxation.

Day 4: Ranomafana - Fianarantsoa

Day stage from 60 km

After breakfast, take the road back to Fianarantsoa and its old town.

A few more kilometers and you will discover the famous vineyards of Ambalavao at the end of the day. Fianarantsoa, literally the city where you learn the good, is known to be the Malagasy capital of craftsmanship.

Day 5: Fianarantsoa - Ranohira

Daily stage from 280 km

Gradually you will leave the plateaus to discover an extraordinary mountain range: the Isalo Massif. This spectacular site of 81 540 ha, is completely silent and rich in mystery.

More than 400 species, most of them endemic, cover the vast savanna areas that you will visit with a specialized guide.

The small town of Ranohira, located at the port of the Isalo National Park, is mainly there to welcome tourists, explorers and other explorers in search of discoveries in this very special place.

Day 6: Ranohira - Tulear

Daily stage of about 240 km

The last stage of the road that will take you to Tulear leaves behind the mountain massifs and reveals an arid and semi-desert landscape, the territory of the famous baobabs of Madagascar.

It will take you under the Tropic of Capricorn , to Tulear the capital of the region.

The white sand of the beaches and the desert steppes offer you a panorama that is completely different from the rest of the country.

A final invitation to adventure under the baobab trees or relax on the endless beaches.

Day 7: Tulear - Antananarivo (domestic flight)

Depending on the time of your flight to Antananarivo, you can visit the lively streets of Tuléar and its colorful markets.

A vehicle will take you to the airport for your return flight to Tana and we will then meet you upon arrival in Antananarivo.

Overnight stay in Villa Sibylle

Of course we can optionally arrange for a connecting tour or a longer stay in Antananarivo.

Day 8: Antananarivo (departure international flight)

If time allows, there are still many possibilities to enjoy this last day in Madagascar, especially attractive is the "Lemurs Park" which is located 22 km outside of Antananarivo, if young and old do not have enough of the droll animals. There are also other attractions in abundance, your guide will be happy to advise you!

In the evening we will take you to the airport, usually the flight home leaves after midnight, so you will appreciate the possibility of a "dayuse" at the hotel and can prepare everything in peace before the flight.

Day Use in the guest house of "Villa Sibylle

Help

FOR MADAGASCAR

After 10 months of total inactivity, self-employed people in the tourism industry in Madagascar are completely without income. There is no opening of the borders in sight in Madagascar and we are at the beginning of the rainy season, which is the low season, even in normal times. I have started a fundraiser for the guides and drivers I know well. From this money we will buy rice and other essentials and distribute them regularly, if possible, until the resumption of travel activities in April 2021 at the earliest. My special thanks to those who have already donated. I will start buying rice tomorrow and will begin distributing it this week.
